Our Three Faves in May

It’s hard to blog when you’re having fun!

This spring, we at SPUR have been out in the community, supporting our Champions as they work to make Cochrane a more sustainable place.  Here are our three favourites from May:

Cochrane High and Glenbow School students spend a day at the park!

1.  Sustainability Champions Glenbow School and Cochrane High organized an outdoor learning day at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park.  On May 21, 120 students took part in field learning opportunities led by dozens of community experts, many of them also Sustainability Champions or Citizens of Sustainability.

Cochrane Sustainability Plan Pathway 13: “We build Cochrane on the strengths of our natural and cultural heritage.”

2.  The Cochrane Community Awards celebration held on May 25 highlighted volunteerism, leadership and innovation in our community. Cochranites are certainly making a positive difference in one another’s lives!

Sustainability Champions Tremar Computer Solutions, Grand Avenue Pharmacy, and the Chamber of Commerce sponsored awards, as did SPUR.

Congratulations to Sustainability Champions Glenbow School Global Stewards which won the Education in Action award and to Ongrowing Works which won the Employer of the Year award.  Well-deserved, both of you!

Cochrane Sustainability Plan Pathway 8: “We are a caring community that lives and celebrates together.”

3.  Sustainability Champion Cochrane Environmental Action Committee (CEAC) organized Cochrane’s 18th Annual Branches & Banks tree plant and park clean-up, in conjunction with Champions Town of Cochrane and Cochrane Toyota.  The weather was perfect!   On May 30-31, volunteers working at Mitford Park and Robinson Pond planted hundreds of trees and bagged loose trash. Attendance was down due to other fabulous events held the same weekend, but energetic volunteers got the work done, keeping Cochrane beautiful for another year.

Cochrane Sustainability Plan Pathway 1: “We are a socially responsible and empowered community.”

Here’s hoping June will be just as much (sustainable) fun as May!
