SPUR Attends Labour Day Parade

Thanks to the support of volunteers, Sustainability Partners Uniting Resources (SPUR) had a high-profile presence at the 2011 Labour Day Parade.  With SPUR Board members Jeff Couillard, Valerie McCracken, Murray Mitchell and Nicole Tomes at the helm, the group used this opportunity to help raise awareness of sustainability across our community.

This year, several thousand area residents and visitors attended the September 5 event, the largest turnout in the parade’s history.

Partnering with CEAC (the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee), SPUR was able to hand out close to 600 compact fluorescent light bulbs along the Parade route.  “It was a great chance to raise awareness of our sustainability initiatives, but in a way that was fun and engaging for people,” says SPUR Co-Chair Jeff Couillard.  “Hopefully the light bulbs will be a good reminder of how small decisions can contribute to a sustainable future.”

Folks along the Parade route were also encouraged to visit the Cochrane Sustainability Plan website, and to sign on as Citizens of Sustainability.  “By working together, we can make a significant difference in Cochrane’s future,” Jeff adds.
